The Gary SouthShore RailCats (14-10) scored nine runs in the final three innings to defeat the Kansas City T-Bones (14-10), 11-9, Monday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Kansas City opened the scoring in front of 4,053 fans as Keanon Simon (pictured) singled off Brad Furnish and scored on a two-base error. Ray Sadler added a solo home run in the inning, and Jim Fasano scored on a Ryan Fox single giving the T-Bones a 3-0 lead after one.
The T-Bones led 4-0 after two, as Simon doubled and scored on a Jacob Blackwood single. Gary cut the lead to 4-2 off Kansas City starter Reid Santos in the third as Mike Massaro and Cristian Guerrero both drove in runs.
Kansas City added two runs in the sixth on a solo home run by Brian Joynt and an RBI single by Simon. Santos exited after six, allowing two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out four. He did not factor into the decision.
The RailCats cut the lead to 7-6 in the seventh off Erik Hamren. Massaro drove in a run with a walk, and Guerrero doubled home two to highlight the inning. Gary then tied the game in the eighth with an RBI single by Massaro against reliever Steven Stewart (2-1).
Stewart started the ninth and gave up two hits before Justin James entered with no outs. Pinch-hitter Tanner Townsend singled with one out to give Gary their first lead of the game, 8-7. A two-run double by Adam Klein extended the RailCats lead to 10-7, and Jay Pecci’s RBI single scored Klein, bringing the score to 11-7. Kyle Dahman recorded the inning’s final out.
Zeb Engle (2-0), who entered in the seventh, worked two innings to pick up the win.
Kansas City made a comeback in the ninth as Blackwood and Rico Washington both hit safely to start the inning and later scored to cut the RailCat lead to 11-9.
The two teams combined for 32 hits, as the T-Bones outhit the RailCats 17-15. Simon paced the T-Bones with a four-for-five performance, driving in two while scoring four times.
Kansas City continues the four game series Tuesday night, sending Cody McAllister (1-2, 4.87) to face RailCats hurler Ryan Zink (1-1, 5.09). Catch all the action through streaming webcast at www.tbonesbaseball.com or on the radio at KXTR 1660 AM.
