KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Manager Andy McCauley and the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League have announced the signing of outfielder Al Benjamin and pitcher Danny Core.

Benjamin, 29, is an 11-year veteran of professional baseball.  He was originally selected in the 12 th round of the 1995 June draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.  He has also played in the Expos, Padres and most recently Cardinals systems.  Benjamin finished the 2006 season with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League.

"Al is a veteran player who's going to come in and play left for us," said McCauley.   "He will give us a little more stability in the outfield as well as in the middle of our lineup."

Benjamin is a career .280 hitter with 98 home runs and 553 RBI in 1,046 professional games.   Benjamin hit a career high 17 home runs in 2005 with Atlantic City in the Atlantic League where he also hit .317 and drove in 73 runs.

Prior to last night's game the T-Bones also signed pitcher Danny Core (pictured).  Core spent the first part of the season playing for the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League.   Prior to this season Core spent the first four seasons of his career in the Toronto Blue Jays system after getting drafted in the seventh round in 2003.

"Core is an experienced reliever that can also spot start for us," said McCauley.   "We like what we saw out of him last night and he adds some more depth to our bullpen."

Core threw a career high 157.1 innings in 2004 with the Charleston RiverDogs posting an ERA of 3.43.   He also struck out 132 batters and walked 53 that season while holding opponents to a .244 batting average.
