04/12/2007 1:14 PM - FARGO, N.D. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed CF Joe Mathis and RHP Brandon Harmsen to contracts for the 2007, the Northern League club announced today. Both Mathis and Harmsen will be in Fargo when the RedHawks open training camp on May 3.
Mathis, 32, is coming off a career-season for the RedHawks, his fourth with the club. The 2006 Northern League MVP won the batting title with a .359 average and also set a new league record with 42 doubles all while leading Fargo-Moorhead to the best record in the league and the Northern League Championship.
In addition to batting average and doubles, Mathis also led the league hits (142), extra-base hits (59), runs scored (95) and total bases (229). He was second in slugging percentage (.578) and triples (6) and third in on-base percentage (.442).
Mathis signed earlier this spring with the Tabasco Olmecas of the Mexican League. He made the club out of spring training but was release after appearing in three games.
Harmsen, 25, returns to the RedHawks in 2007 after pitching for both Fargo-Moorhead and in the Milwaukee Brewers organization in 2006. Harmsen was originally acquired from the Gary SouthShore RailCats last spring and appeared in 30 games out of the Hawks bullpen. He was 3-3 with a 3.89 ERA and one save. In 39.1 innings pitched, Harmsen allowed 19 runs (17 earned) on 34 hits. He struck out 35 batters and walked 11.
Harmsens contract was purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers organization on July 29 and he finished the season with the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League (A). Harmsen was 1-0 with a 5.51 ERA for Brevard County in 10 games. He struck out 19 batters in 16.1 innings.
-The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have released three members from the 2006 Northern League championship club. INF/C Derek Dormanen, DH Harry Berrios and LHP Josh Gray have all been given their releases. Dormanen and Berrios have chosen to retire.
-Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks RHP Todd George has been placed on the Northern League Inactive List. George has agreed to a contract with a new professional league in Mexico and will head south of the border at the end of April.
-Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks manager Doug Simunic selected C Nicholas Wayne at the 2007 Northern League Tryout Camp in Tampa, FL on April 3. Wayne, who resides in Portage, IN, is expected to be in Fargo when the RedHawks open training camp on May 3.
