Jim Fasano saw his league-leading, 21-game hit streak end after going 0-for-five as the Kansas City T-Bones (40-25) dropped the rubber match of their three-game series against the Rockford RiverHawks (29-35), 12-8, on Sunday night.
Travis Scott greeted T-Bones starter Cody McAllister (8-4) with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the RiverHawks an early 3-0 lead. Brian Joynt tripled home a run against Kyle Ruwe (4-6) in the T-Bones half of the second and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from the next batter, Rico Washington, to pull Kansas City within one, 3-2.
Rockford scored one in the second and picked up three more runs in the third, two on a home run by Jono Brooks, to extend their lead to 7-2. McAllister left after three innings having surrendered seven runs on eight hits in the loss.
The RiverHawks plated another run in the bottom of the fourth against reliever Kyle Heim. An RBI single by Dwayne White in the top of the fifth pushed the score to 8-3 before a two-run bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a solo shot from Jake Eigsti, gave the RiverHawks a 10-3 advantage.
Drew Graham and Hunter Mense combined to throw two scoreless frames for Kansas City. The T-Bones pulled within two with a five-run seventh, chasing Ruwe from the contest. The first four batters of the inning collected hits for Kansas City, with an RBI double by Keanon Simon and run-scoring single from Jacob Blackwood plating the first two. Brian Joynt drove in the third run with an RBI double before Rico Washington forced two runs home with a single to cap off the frame.
Ruwe left after the first four batters reached. He picked up the victory after allowing seven runs on nine hits over six-plus innings of work.
Rockford added their final two runs against Ryan Fox on three hits and an error in the eighth to make the final 12-8. Fasano had a chance to extend his streak in the ninth, but an over-the-shoulder catch by third baseman Evan McArthur ended the streak.
