05/15/2008 9:10 PM -
The Kansas City T-Bones were able to continue their recent success on Opening Day tonight in Winnipeg, taking their third straight season opener with a 3-2 victory over the Goldeyes in front of 6,232 fans at Canwest Park.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning before plating single runs in the second frame. Kansas City got their run when Neb Brown drove in Kevin Mahar with a two-out single off Winnipeg starter Ronald “Bear” Bay. The Goldeyes evened the score off Kansas City hurler Anthony Boughner with a sacrifice fly from Brady Everett, plating Kevin West.
Boughner settled down after surrendering the run, holding Winnipeg scoreless over his final four innings of work while allowing just two more hits. The left-hander struck out the final three batters he faced in a perfect sixth inning. Boughner earned the victory after allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one in six innings of work.
Kansas City picked up their final two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by catcher Craig Hurba, who was playing in his first game with Kansas City since 2006. The blast drove in Mahar, who doubled in each of his first two at bats as a T-Bone. He finished two-for-four with two runs scored.
Bay left after five innings, suffering the loss after allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five. Winnipeg got four scoreless innings of relief from Brian Beuning, Ryan Ariail and Cristian Mendoza. Including a double play ball from Rob Watson in the eighth, Goldeyes relievers retired the last 16 batters Kansas City sent to the plate.
Chris Rhoads pitched a scoreless seventh for Kansas City. Tag Horner surrendered a run on a double by Trino Aguilar in the eighth, plating Max Poulin who reached with a single. David Trahan threw a perfect ninth to earn the save.
The two teams face off again tomorrow with Kenny Durost going for Kansas City against Brandon Kintzler of Winnipeg. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
