The Kansas City T-Bones overcame an early deficit, scoring eight unanswered runs as they defeated the Schaumburg Flyers, 8-4, at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Starting pitcher Dustin Bolton struggled early, giving up four runs in the top of the first for an early 4-0 Flyers lead. After two quick outs, Jose Valdez doubled and scored when the next batter, Peanut Williams, singled to center. Following a walk to Felix Jose, Vince Harrison doubled home Williams. Jeff Dunbar then drove in the final two runs with a double to left.
After the first inning, Bolton allowed just two runners to reach second before giving way to Payton Tweddale with one on and one out in the fifth. Tweddale induced a flyout from the only batter he faced before Cody McAllister forced a groundout to finish the inning.
McAllister allowed just three hits over two and one-thirds innings for his first victory of the season.
Aaron Howard entered the fifth with a 4-0 lead, but allowed all five batters he faced in the frame to reach safely, including a three-run home run by Jim Fasano (pictured) that pulled Kansas City within one. Jim Popp then entered for the Flyers and was struck by a line drive from John Urick that turned into a fielder’s choice groundout. Popp was forced to leave and gave way to Tom Lyons with runners at the corners and one out. Craig Hurba tied the game off Lyons with an RBI groundout and Ryan Fox gave the T-Bones the lead with an RBI double to left-center.
Howard was charged with all five runs and suffered the loss after surrendering seven hits while striking out six in four-plus innings.
Kansas City added two more in the sixth on sacrifice flies by Damian Rolls and Urick. Dunbar came in from right field to pitch for Schaumburg and allowed just one hit over one and two-thirds scoreless innings. The T-Bones added their final run on an RBI double by Ken Harvey in the eighth.
Andy Shipman finished the final two innings for the T-Bones, including a perfect ninth to earn the save.
The T-Bones will try for the sweep tomorrow night when they send Chris Rhoads to the mound against Steve Shippey. First pitch is set for 7:05. Single-game tickets for the T-Bones start at just $6.
