The Schaumburg Flyers (6-6) erased a three-run deficit with a four-run seventh inning as they defeated the Kansas City T-Bones (7-6), 5-4, in front of 6,257 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark tonight.
Victor Ferrante began the scoring with a solo home run off Ryan Knippschild in the third to give the Flyers their first lead of the game.
In the fourth inning, Kansas City loaded the bases against Edwin Almonte (1-0) with a single, double and a walk. With one out, Mark Minicozzi (pictured) connected for a grand slam, his first home run of the season, to give the T-Bones a 4-1 lead.
Following the home run by Ferrante, Knippschild held Schaumburg scoreless until the game-deciding seventh inning. After a groundout, Richard Mercado doubled and scored on an RBI single by Jason Colson to cut the T-Bones lead to 4-2 and chase Knippschild from the game. Daniel Sattler entered and surrendered an RBI triple to Ferrante. Jeff Dunbar doubled two batters later to tie the game at four. Following a passed ball, Dunbar scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.
Knippschild surrendered three runs on four hits in six and one-thirds innings, settling for a no-decision. The left-hander struck out seven in the contest. Sattler (0-1) took the loss in his T-Bones debut after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits in one and two-thirds innings. Payton Tweddale threw a perfect ninth to finish the game for Kansas City.
Almonte was replaced by Garrett Rieck after pitching six and two-thirds innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits in the win. Craig James earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Kansas City did not get a runner into scoring position after the fifth inning.
Dustin Bolton looks to prevent a three-game sweep for Kansas City as he faces Adam Howard of Schaumburg tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 5:05. Single-game tickets for the T-Bones start at just $6. Season tickets, group tickets, mini-plans and All-You-Can-Eat plans are available as well.
