The Kansas City T-Bones (15-19) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-11) in game one of a doubleheader today, 9-3, at CommnityAmerica Ballpark.
After three perfect innings by Andrew Cruse (2-3) in front of 4,507 fans, Kansas City began the fourth inning with back-to-back singles by Aharon Eggleston and Damian Rolls. After a walk to Greg Jacobs loaded the bases and Brad Correll was retired on an infield fly, Jim Fasano hit a two-run double to give the T-Bones the early advantage. Mark Minicozzi extended the lead to four with a two-run single two batters later. He was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double to end the inning.
An RBI double by Rolls extended the T-Bones lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Cruse left after surrendering five runs on six hits over five innings in the loss.
Winnipeg pulled within three against Justin James (3-4) with a two-run sixth, plating their first run on a solo home run by Kevin West. An RBI single by Cory Patton capped off the inning.
James allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out six over six innings in the victory.
The T-Bones used three hits and a throwing error by pitcher Tim Layden to extend their lead to 9-2 with four runs in their half of the sixth. After an RBI single by newcomer Jacob Blackwood, Layden overthrew first on a comebacker from Eggleston that allowed two runners to score. Correll drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.
Winnipeg added their final run on back-to-back doubles against Todd Moser in the seventh, with West collecting the RBI for the Goldeyes. Moser allowed the one run on two hits while striking out one in an inning of relief.
Blackwood finished two-for-three with an RBI in his T-Bones debut. Right fielder Cory Patton relieved Layden and got the final two outs for Winnipeg.
