The Kansas City T-Bones have announced that the Seattle Mariners have purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Luis Villarreal.
Villarreal, 29, leaves Kansas City as the current Northern League leader in ERA (3.07) and strikeouts (87) while posting a 5-3 record over 96 and two-thirds innings in 16 starts for the T-Bones. Villarreal made four appearances this season of five-plus innings where he didn’t allow a run. His best performance came against Fargo-Moorhead on July 11 when he held the RedHawks to just two hits over seven shutout innings in a victory. He leaves having won each of his last three decisions.
“We’re happy to see Luis get this opportunity,” said T-Bones manager Andy McCauley. “He’s shown again this season that he can perform at a high level and we wish him the best of luck with Seattle.”
Villarreal was originally selected in the 20th round of the 2002 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox. In 2005, he pitched two complete game shutouts for the Joliet JackHammers, including a no-hitter against the Kansas City T-Bones on August 6. He remains the only pitcher to no-hit Kansas City.
Villarreal is the first T-Bones player to have his contract purchase this season and is the 17th overall since 2003.
