Blackwood Paces Offensive Display in Regular-Season Finale

08/31/2009 9:02 PM -

Jacob Blackwood led a 22-hit outburst from the Kansas City T-Bones (46-50) as they defeated the Joliet JackHammers (33-62), 13-6, in the regular-season finale for both clubs tonight at Silver Cross Field.  The T-Bones matched their regular-season record from last year’s championship campaign.

Jim Fasano and Neb Brown started the scoring against Jason Novak (2-7) in the second, each blasting solo home runs for a 2-0 Kansas City lead.  The T-Bones added four more in the third, the last three coming on a bases-clearing double by Blackwood for a 6-0 advantage.

Blackwood’s hit came against reliever Luke O’Loughlin, who entered after Novak walked Brown to load the bases.  Novak suffered the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in just two and two-thirds innings.

Joliet scored five of their runs in the bottom of the third against Brett Davis (2-0), highlighted by a two-run double from Kevin Rios and a two-run home run by Joe Gaetti.  They added their final tally in the sixth on an RBI fielder’s choice from Mike Garcia.

Davis allowed six runs on nine hits in six innings in the victory.

Fasano added two more runs with his second home run of the game in the fourth before Blackwood capped off the four-run inning with a two-run double.  Kansas City added a single run in the sixth and finished their night with a two-run ninth, using RBI singles from Blackwood and Jeff Helps to push the final score to 13-6.

Justin James (two perfect innings) and Chris Rhoads (one) combined to retire the final nine JackHammers to finish the game for Kansas City.

Blackwood ended the contest with six RBI, going five-for-six to tie a team record for hits in a game.  Fasano finished three-for-six with a double, two home runs and three RBI.  Ryan Fox singled in his final at bat, but struck out three times to set a league record for strikeouts in a season at 120.  Brown and Craig Hurba each finished with four hits.

Kansas City will take tomorrow off before starting their title defense with a first-round matchup against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Wednesday.  Neither team has announced their playoff rotation.  Tickets for the first two games (Wednesday, September 2 and Thursday, September 3) of the best-of-five series are available now by calling 913-328-5618 or visiting www.tbonesbaseball.com  When purchased in advance, tickets are just $6.  If purchased at the gate, tickets are $7.  All seating for the playoff contests at CommunityAmerica Ballpark is general admission.  For more information, call 913-328-5618 or visit the T-Bones website.
