The Kansas City T-Bones and manager Tim Doherty have signed former major leaguer Dewon Brazelton to a contract for the 2010 season.
Brazelton, 29, was originally selected third overall by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 2001 amateur draft. Brazelton signed with Tampa Bay on August 25, 2001 and made his professional debut the next season at Double-A Orlando. On September 13, 2002, the right-hander made his major league debut in a start at Toronto opposite Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays.
Brazelton spent four seasons with the Devil Rays, appearing in 54 games at the major league level from 2002-05. He was signed by the San Diego Padres in 2006 before splitting the 2007 season between the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates systems.
“Dewon will fill the hole left by Luis (Villarreal),” said Doherty. “He will come in as our number one starter and will be the horse needed to anchor the rotation.”
In his only stint in independent baseball, a 22-start span with Camden of the Atlantic League last season, Brazelton went 6-8 with a 3.69 ERA in 126 and two-thirds innings. He finished the campaign fifth in the league in ERA.
Kansas City will host exhibition games against Kansas City Kansas Community College on May 11 and 12. Both games start at 7:05 p.m. The T-Bones begin their 2010 campaign against the RailCats in Gary, IN on May 20 and will host the defending champion Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in their home opener on May 28 at 7:05 p.m. Single-game and season ticket packages are available now by calling 913-328-5618.
