The Kansas City T-Bones (17-12) managed just six hits Saturday night and fell to the Schaumburg Flyers (8-20), 4-1, in front of 8,108 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The Flyers scored first in the third inning off T-Bones starter Reid Santos (1-3), plating two runs on a double by Joey Gomes that gave Schaumburg a 2-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the seventh when Travis Brown started the inning with a solo home run. Santos exited one batter later, giving way to Kevin Light. Light surrendered an RBI double to his first batter, Richard Mercado, to cap the Flyers scoring. Santos allowed four runs on10 hits over six-plus innings, walking two and striking out six in the loss.
Kansas City broke through against Schaumburg starter Ryan Gehring (1-2) in the eighth inning when Dwayne White scored on a fielder’s choice. Gehring faced the minimum through five innings and scattered five hits while striking out eight and walking one over eight innings, earning the win.
Light worked an inning and one-third, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Steven Stewart took over for Light in the seventh and worked the final inning and two-thirds, striking out one and walking one.
Joshua Giles pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.
Kansas City wraps up the three-game series with Schaumburg Sunday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. T-Bones right-hander Cody McAllister (2-2, 6.04 ERA) is scheduled to start against Flyers left-hander Alain Quijano (1-3, 4.25 ERA).
