Reliever Brian Gartley (2-0) threw a scoreless frame in the top of the 11th inning before drawing a bases-loaded walk from Franklin Perez (0-1) in the bottom of the frame to give the Joliet JackHammers (15-17) an 8-7 win over the Kansas City T-Bones (20-14) tonight at Silver Cross Field.
Perez induced a flyout to begin the bottom of the 11th before consecutive singles and a hit batter loaded the bases for Gartley. After three straight balls, Perez brought the count full before issuing the game-winning walk. Perez suffered his first loss as a T-Bone after allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Gartley picked up his second win of the season for the JackHammers.
Kansas City began the scoring on the night when a solo home run by Rico Washington gave them a quick 1-0 lead against Devin Anderson in the first inning. The T-Bones added two more runs in the second and chased Anderson from the game with a two-run home run by Brian Joynt in the sixth, his 10th of the season.
Anderson was charged with five runs on seven hits in five innings.
Reid Santos threw five perfect innings for Kansas City before a six-run Joliet sixth erased the T-Bones 5-0 advantage. Rafael Mendez became the first JackHammer to reach base with a leadoff single and later scored the first tally on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Wyatt. Kevin Rios followed with an RBI double, chasing Santos from the game. The next batter, Freddie Thon, reached safely on an error to drive in the third run, while a throwing error on the same play pushed the score to 5-4. Reliever Steven Stewart then surrendered two RBI singles to cap off the inning.
Santos was charged with four runs on just two hits in five and one-thirds innings.
Kansas City regained the lead in the eighth on a two-run double by Keith Hernandez, but an RBI single by Jon Nelson off Erik Hamren again evened the score at 7-7 in the bottom of the inning. Both teams remained scoreless until Gartley’s walk ended the contest.
The two teams face off again tomorrow night as Kansas City sends Cody McAllister (3-2, 4.86) to face Rory Shortell (1-3, 5.74) in a battle of right-handers. First pitch is set for 7:10. Catch all the action through streaming webcast at www.tbonesbaseball.com or on the radio at KXTR 1660 AM.
