The Kansas City T-Bones (32-17) finished off the first half of the season with a three-game sweep of the Gary SouthShore RailCats (23-26) Sunday afternoon in a 6-4 win at U.S. Steel Yard. Kansas City enters the break winners of five straight and 11 of their last 12.
Keanon Simon began the contest with a single against Brad Halsey (2-4) and eventually scored on an RBI double by Rico Washington for a quick 1-0 lead. Gary answered two innings later when Jeff Beachum began the third inning with a single off Cody McAllister (5-3) and scored on a sacrifice fly from Brian Kolb to tie the game at one.
Gary took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly by Adam Klein in the bottom of the fifth, but the T-Bones scored four times on three hits and an error in the sixth to gain a 5-2 advantage. Ryan Fox forced in the first run with a bases-loaded walk before Dwayne White plated two on a single to right field. Fox scored the final run when the next batter, Keith Hernandez, grounded into a double play.
Halsey left after six innings have allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits in the loss.
The RailCats picked up their third run on a two-out RBI double from Louis Ott in the bottom of the sixth. McAllister went seven innings for Kansas City, holding Gary to three runs, two earned, on nine hits in the victory.
Hernandez drove in the T-Bones final run with an RBI double in the eighth. After Steven Stewart threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Kansas City, the RailCats capped the score at 6-4 against Franklin Perez in the ninth, using two hits and an error to plate their final tally. Perez picked up his sixth save of the season in the outing.
The Northern League now enters their 2010 All-Star break, with the 2010 Interleague All-Star Game between the Golden Baseball League and Northern League set for Wednesday, July 14 in Tucson, AZ. Kansas City begins the second half of the season at home with a nine-game homestand beginning Friday, July 16.
