Ray Sadler capped off a six-run seventh inning with a three-run home run as the Kansas City T-Bones (46-49) erased an early five-run deficit to take Thursday night’s contest against the Sioux Falls Pheasants (40-54), 7-6, in front of 6,792 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Large settled down after the second as he surrendered just three more hits over his final five and one-thirds innings. He gave way to Kyle Dahman after inducing a groundout to begin the eighth and earned the victory after allowing five runs on nine hits over seven and one-thirds innings.
Kansas City chipped away at the deficit with a single run against Kyle Ruwe in the second to make the score 5-1. Ruwe went six innings for Sioux Falls, but would not factor into the decision despite surrendering the lone run on just four hits.
Dan McDaniel took over for Ruwe in the seventh and failed to retire any of the four batters he faced, eventually giving way to Ryan Grant (0-3) after allowing three hits and issuing a walk. Grant immediately surrendered a two-run single to Keanon Simon to bring the T-Bones within one, 5-4.
After recording the first out of the inning on a flyout, Grant faced Sadler with two on base. Sadler fell behind in the count after two quick strikes before taking a ball from the right-hander. Sadler then smashed the next pitch over the left-field wall for his 20th home run of the season and a 7-5 T-Bones lead.
Grant retired the next two batters but suffered a blown save and the loss in the contest. The Iowa-native was charged with two runs on two hits in an inning of work.
Sioux Falls added a single tally in the eighth against Dahman to cap the score at 7-6. Dahman earned his eighth save after allowing one run on two hits over one and two-thirds innings.
Sadler’s blast gave him 94 RBI on the season, tying the franchise single-season record set by Eddie Pearson in 2004. Sadler has five games left to break the tie.
