An opening-day record attendance of 8,014 were on hand at CommunityAmerica Ballpark Saturday night as the Wichita Wingnuts handed the Kansas City T-Bones their second loss of the season, 4-3.

The first game of 50 at CommunityAmerica started with Kansas City’s hot bats setting the tone. In the first inning, leadoff batter Kennard Jones laced a double to left field. With one out, Brandon Jones joined him on base with a walk. Both were brought home on a three-run home run from Matt Padgett, the first of the year for the T-Bones.

Wichita answered with a home run in the top of the second off the bat of CJ Ziegler. The Wingnuts then tied the game in the third with a two-run home run from Jake Kahaulelio that landed in the visitors’ bullpen. The T-Bones fell behind in the fifth when an RBI single from Ryan Khoury drove in the winning run. Kansas City would never make up the deficit.

“You have to work really hard to get through their first four batters,” said T-Bones manager Kenny Hook. “That’s the difference in the game. You can’t let those guys beat you.”

After a rough first inning, Wingnuts starter Ryan Hinson (1-0) recovered by shutting out the T-Bones over the next four innings. Hinson finished the game with three earned runs and three strikeouts over five innings. Reliever Josh Dew pitched the ninth and got the save.

T-Bones starter Lucas Irvine (0-1) went six innings and took the loss.

The T-Bones play at home on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. against Wichita. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at Community America Ballpark at 913-328-5618.
