T-Bones miss chances in loss to Saltdogs

LINCOLN, Neb. – Kansas City struggled to get timely hits, stranding 10 runners, and had three untimely errors in a 3-1 loss to Lincoln on Saturday night at Haymarket Park.

“It was a game of missed opportunities and big mistakes,” said T-Bones manager Kenny Hook. “We had eight hits but you can’t leave 10 guys on base and expect to win.”

The T-Bones had runners on base in all but two innings, including the bases loaded in the fourth, but Lincoln starter Moises Melendez — along with relievers Eddie McKiernan (4-1), P.J. Zocchi and R.J. Rodriguez (10) — kept the T-Bones off the scoreboard. Lincoln’s pitchers had three inning-ending strikeouts on the night, including one that ended the game.

Kansas City’s run came in the second inning, after Brandon Jones, who was one of three T-Bones batters with two hits, led off the inning with a double and scored on the RBI single by Felix Molina. (Kennard Jones and Devin Goodwin, also, had two hits apiece.)

T-Bones starter Eric Gonzalez (1-1) allowed only one run through the first 6 1/3 innings, until Yasel Gomez, who had scored Lincoln’s lone run in the fifth, singled and then scored on a triple by Brad Payne. Two batters later, Payne scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Stephen Douglas.

The T-Bones and Saltdogs will conclude their four-game series on Sunday night at Haymarket Park with first pitch scheduled for 5:05. Aaron Tullo (4-0) will start for Kansas City, while Matt Bywater (2-1) gets the start for Lincoln.
