The Roster's Set... Let's Play Ball!

05/18/2005 5:42 PM - KANSAS CITY - “Dirty” Al Gallagher had been dreading this day since the start of spring training. Gallagher will tell anyone who will listen that cutdown day in baseball is the only day he actually works, and that was the case in 2005. Strong competition in spring camp made for some difficult decisions for Gallagher.

Thirteen of the twenty on the opening day roster return from last season’s club, including all four veterans. The positions break down as follows (returnees indicated in bold):

Pitchers: RHS Greg Bicknell, RHS Caleb Balbuena, RHR Adam Clay, RHR Derek Forbes, RHR Joe Goodmann, RHS Jonathan Krysa, RHS Jon McDonald, LHR J.C. Ortiz, RHR David Viane and LHS Nick Webb.

Catchers: Matt Ceriani and Sean Flynn.

Infielders: Mike Brown, Ray Brown, Chad Hill, Brandon Jones and Eddie Pearson.

Outfielders: Cody Nowlin, Rick Prieto and Chad Sosebee.

Of the returning players, Prieto and Pearson were league all-stars at the end of the 2004 season; Bicknell led the league in wins, with thirteen; Krysa set a number of league longevity records in 2004; McDonald won nine games for the T-Bones; Ray Brown ranked in the top five in nine offensive categories in 2004; Mike Brown batted .322 for Kansas City in 47 games; and Nowlin batted a solid .282 in 2004.

The newcomers include Clay, who played college baseball at Park University and Kansas City, KS Community College; Goodmann, who posted a microscopic 1.17 ERA for the Central League champion Edinburg Roadrunners; Webb, formerly a ninth round pick of the Colorado Rockies; Flynn, a tough catcher who played under Kansas coach Ritchie Price; Jones, a third baseman with a strong junior college record signed out of tryouts; and Sosebee, a utilityman/pitcher who won twelve games in relief in 2004 in the Frontier League and also played all nine positions in one game last August.

“It was a tough spring camp, and we had some difficult decisions to make,” said Gallagher. “We think the pieces we have in place can bring playoff baseball back to CommunityAmerica Ballpark.”
