05/23/2006 10:25 PM - KANSAS CITY, KAN. A comeback effort late in the game fell one run short Tuesday night, as the T-Bones dropped a 5-4 contest to the Joliet Jackhammers at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
It didnt take long for Joliets offense to heat up. Chad Ehrnsberger, the Jackhammers third batter, sent a Greg Bicknell pitch for a ride, driving home himself and Mike Goss, who singled to start the game.
The T-Bones answered back in their half of the second inning. Charles Peterson drew a walk, advanced on a wild pitch by Jackhammer hurler Roger Luque, and scored on a Brandon Jones single to left field.
Joliet responded half an inning later as Jayson Drobiak hit his first home run of the season to give the Jackhammers a 3-1 advantage.
Greg Jacobs started the bottom half of the fourth inning with a double, and was hit in one batter later as Eddie Pearson hit his first bomb of the season, tying the game at three runs.
The Jackhammers gave the good guys one last blow in the fifth inning. John Lackaff was rewarded with his leadoff triple when he scored on a grounder hit by Ehrnsberger. Bubba Smith drew a walk two batters later, advanced to second on his first steal of the season, then was hit home on a single by Kyle Nichols.
Kansas Citys final run came in the top of the eighth inning, when Gabby Delgado singled for his first hit of the game. Delgado advanced to second when Jacobs was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice fly out to right field scored Delgado to bring the T-Bones to within one run.
Bicknell (1-1) was hit with the loss after giving up five earned runs on eight hits and three walks in eight innings pitched. Joliets Roger Luque earned the win, while Amad Stephens picked up the save.
The same two teams will battle it out tomorrow night. Buddy Blair will take the bump for Kansas City, while Luis Villareal will start for the Jackhammers. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
