05/24/2006 10:59 PM - KANSAS CITY, KAN. For the second straight night, a late-game comeback effort fell short as the T-Bones fell 8-7 to the Joliet Jackhammers in front of 4,779 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The T-Bones fell behind early, giving up a two-run home run to Joliets Jayson Drobiak in the first inning. Kansas City responded with a single as Eddie Pearson hit Michael Spidale home and bringing the T-Bones to within one.
Joliet scored one run in the third, then exploded for five runs on five hits in the fifth inning, including a two-run homerun by Chad Ehrnsberger. After five, the T-Bones trailed 8-1.
Kansas Citys bats finally came alive again in the seventh inning. Spidale singled as the innings second batter while Greg Jacobs walked two batters later. A single to right scored Spidale, while a ground rule double by Charles Peterson allowed Jacobs to score. After seven, the T-Bones trailed 8-4.
Spidale, Doug Dreher, and Greg Jacobs each found their way on base to open the ninth inning. Pinch-runner Eric Vega was brought home when Pearson grounded out to second. Charles Petersons ground out scored Dreher, and Jacobs scored on a throwing error by Joliet third baseman John Lackaff, but Craig Hurba grounded out to second to end the game, leaving the T-Bones on the short end of an 8-7 final score.
Joliets Luis Villarreal earned his first win of the season for the Jackhammers, giving up two runs while allowing seven runs, striking out five, and walking just two in his five innings of work. Amad Stephens scored his second save of the season in the game.
Kansas Citys Buddy Blair took the loss for the good guys, giving up six runs on nine hits. Blair struck out four while walking just one batter in the loss.
The same two teams will battle it out in the series finale tomorrow night. Right-hander Jonathan Krysa (0-1) will start for the T-Bones while Todd Ozias (0-1) will take the bump for Joliet. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
