04/24/2007 4:37 PM - KANSAS CITY, Kan. The Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League announced today the acquisition of catcher Jason Belcher, and pitcher Jonathan Hunton. The T-Bones acquired Belcher from the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks in exchange for future considerations, and signed Hunton as a free agent.
Belcher, 34, was originally a fifth round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2000. He has played professionally since his draft year in the Brewers and Expos/Nationals systems advancing as high as AA in 04 and 05. He spent last season in the independent Can-Am League with the New Jersey Jackals. Belcher hit .286 with four home runs and 31 RBIs in 60 games with the Jackals. His best season was with the Class A High Desert Maverick in 2003. That year he hit .320 with five home runs and 54 RBIs in 91 games.
Hes an experienced catcher that will catch a majority of our games, said T-Bones manager Andy McCauley. We expect him to help our pitching staff and also our offense with him hitting in the middle of the lineup.
Hunton, 24, was drafted in the 11th round in 2004 by the Chicago Cubs with who he signed. He spent all five seasons of his professional career in the Cubs system, before his release at the end of the 06 season. In his three minor league seasons he has compiled an ERA of 4.70 with an 8-11 record and 12 saves. He has appeared in 113 games going 151.1 innings all in relief. Hunton has walked 90 with 146 strikeouts.
We are looking for Jon to solidify our bullpen situation, said McCauley. He had respectable numbers with the Cubs organization and we are hoping to use him in situational roles.
