T-Bones Welcome Women to Tryout

04/25/2007 2:00 PM - KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League are waiving the $60 entry fee for the first 10 women who decide to try out for the 2007 team. Men are also encouraged to tryout. The tryout is open to anyone interested in seeing if they have what it takes to be a part of the T-Bones in 2007.

“We are going to give everybody a chance to play for the T-Bones,” said T-Bones general manager Rick Muntean. “We would love to be the first professional organization to send a female to the Major Leagues.”

If a female were to be chosen, this wouldn’t be the first time a woman has played for the T-Bones franchise. In 1997, Ila Borders became the first woman to play in a men’s professional baseball game as member of the Duluth-Superior Dukes (Duluth, Min) prior to the team’s move to Kansas City. Borders’ three-year Northern League tenure ended with the Madison Black Wolf in 1999. She retired from baseball at the end of the following season after playing for the Zion Pioneerzz of the Western Baseball League.

The tryout will be held at CommunityAmerica Ballpark and begins Saturday morning at 9 with registration starting at 8 a.m. Registration is available at the stadium the day of the tryout.
