KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City T-Bones picked up the win in the first ever “Farmers’ Market Classic” against the Frontier League’s River City Rascals, 7-5 Saturday afternoon. The first pitch was 10 a.m. and the teams completed a full nine innings, even though the T-Bones led going into the bottom of the ninth. The win propelled the T-Bones to finish the preseason with a perfect 5-0 record.
Newly acquired pitcher from the St. Paul Saints, Anthony Boughner, started the game on the mound for Kansas City. The Rascals opened the scoring in the top of the second when Boughner gave up a solo home run to first baseman Bobby Mosby, the only hit he would allow in his two innings of work. The T-Bones answered back and tied the affair in the third inning, when Rob Watson grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring catcher Casey Clary from third base.
River City regained the lead in the top of the fourth off reliever Kenny Durost. Durost allowed two runs on one hit in the inning, walking four in the frame. One of the Rascals runs in the fourth scored when Brad Hough drew a walk with the bases loaded, plating Anthony Albano. Despite the shaky fourth, Durost got the win thanks to an explosion from the Kansas City bats and legs in the bottom of the fourth. The T-Bones scored five runs off of pitcher Matt Luca in the inning, who also struggled with his control, walking five and throwing two wild pitches. Also in the inning, center fielder Aharon Eggleston had a two RBI single and left fielder Brandon Jones stole home when Eggleston got in a rundown between first and second. Both runners were safe on the play. Luca picked up the loss, getting only one out in his appearance.
The Rascals responded with a run off of pitcher Travis Schlichting in the top of the fifth inning. Kansas City answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when third baseman Neb Brown scored on a Collin Walker wild pitch. The Rascals scored once more, and unearned run, in the sixth inning off pitcher Logan McElwain, but were unable to generate any more runs off of relief pitchers Matt Schweitzer, Joe Barbosa and Jon Hunton, all of whom pitched one inning a piece. Hunton collected the save after he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
