Corey Walter joins the T-Bones from the Oakland Athletics organization where the he was the 28th round pick in the 2014 June draft. Walter spent most of last season at AA Midland in the Texas League, going 4-6 with a 6.21 ERA in 75.1 innings and adding 39 strike outs for the RockHounds. He would appear in 26 games and make nine starts at AA. Walter was sent to the rookie level Arizona League in June for a rehab stint for the Athletics. He would toss four innings, giving up two earned runs in those four innings.
In 2017 Walter saw time at both AAA and AA for Oakland. He opened the season at AA Midland, working in 44.1 innings in 10 games, and he made nine starts, posting a 2.44 ERA with 30 strike outs. On May 23 Walter would be promoted to Nashville where he would spend the majority of the season at AAA in the Pacific Coast League. He would pitch in 21 games, making 11 starts with a 2-6 record and one save for the Sounds. Walter would strike out 46 in 72.2 innings and surrender 97 hits and 42 earned runs with a 5.20 ERA.
Walter spent the entire season at AA Midland in 2016, going 3-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 29 ball games. He would make 16 starts and pick up one save. The right hander struck out 54 in a career high 100.1 innings for Midland, giving up 24 earned runs on 91 hits. He would also earn mid-season All-Star honors in the Texas League in 2016. During the 2015 season, Walter set another career high, this time in games, with 45 appearances out of the pen for high A Stockton in the California League. He led the team in games pitched, and his ERA of 1.42 would also be tops on the team. He would go on to notch eight saves with a 1-2 record in 57 innings for the Ports.
In his rookie season, he pitched in four games, working 6.2 innings with no earned runs at rookie level Arizona. Walter saw most of his time his first season at Vermont in the New York-Penn League where he would work in 17 games, all in relief, in 20.1 innings with 20 strikeouts. Walter was drafted out of West Virginia University and has been a part of two Texas League Championship Clubs with Midland in 2016 and 2017. The 6-3 righty hails from Wheeling, West Virginia where he starred at Wheeling Park High School. Walter was a four-year player for the Mountaineers where he went 14-20 in 265.2 innings with a 4.46 ERA in 58 games with 31 starts. As a professional, Walter has a career 3.50 ERA in 378.2 minor league innings with 246 strike outs.
