RailCats Sweep T-Bones With 6-2 Win

08/04/2005 10:07 PM - The Gary SouthShore RailCats have shown the Kansas City T-Bones they can manufacture a run. Thursday night at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind., the RailCats manufactured six runs against T-Bone starter Greg Bicknell and handed the Kansas City ace just his fourth loss of the season, beating the T-Bones 6-2.

Both teams had twelve hits in the game, but the T-Bones had two runners cut down attempting to steal and stranded five runners in the final two innings, including a top of the eighth in which they left the bases loaded. That would prove to be a pivotal frame in the game, as Bicknell (L, 11-4) would allow three RailCat runs in the bottom of the inning to ice the game.

The T-Bones scored first in the game when Brandon Jones, who had walked, scored on Sean Flynn's second-inning double to right-center against lefty Jamie Bennett (W, 8-2). The hit, one of a season-high three for Flynn in the game, gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead. But as had been the pattern in the series, the RailCats fought back with two in the bottom of the inning. Tanner Townsend's sacrifice fly tied the game and Steve Haake's fielder's choice broke the tie.

Gary got their third run in the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Anthony Iapoce to score Haake, who had reached on a fielder's choice and stolen second. Greg Jacobs socked his seventh homer for the T-Bones in the top of the sixth to make the score 3-2, but that was as close as the T-Bones would get, with Gary scoring thrice in the eighth against Bicknell.

The game was marked by a couple of crucial departures for the T-Bones. Jacobs left the game in the bottom of the sixth after he came up limping after chasing a Tanner Townsend fly ball into the right field corner, and Bicknell was ejected from the game after his departure in the eighth inning for disputing the strike zone with home plate umpire Randy Bertram.

The T-Bones fall to 4 1/2 games back in the second half standings with the loss, behind the first place RailCats. Kansas City moves on to Joliet for a three-game series before a Monday off-day. Jon McDonald will start for the T-Bones against JackHammer starter Allen Levrault.

Notes: Rick Prieto was 4-for-4 for the T-Bones in the leadoff spot... Sean Flynn was 3-for-4 in the game for Kansas City...
