CALGARY, Alb. – The Calgary Vipers were able to convert three T-Bones errors into four runs as Kansas City fell 11-8 Friday Night at Foothills Stadium.  T-Bones starter Trevor Caughey pitched into the sixth allowing five runs, three earned, while walking and striking out six.  Their offense kept the T-Bones in the game as Kansas City tied the game twice and took the lead in the middle innings, but they couldn’t hold on for the win.

The Vipers got going in the first as Darrel Brinkley reached on a Rob Watson throwing error before scoring on a base hit by Carlos Duncan, giving the Vipers an early 1-0 lead. They added another unearned run in the second when Manabu Kuramochi scored from first on an errant pickoff attempt by Caughey.

The T-Bones got on the board for the first time in the top of the fourth when Al Benjamin doubled to start the inning and was followed by a walk to Calvin Pickering.  Jason Belcher then drove in Benjamin with a sacrifice fly to left before Nelson Gord singled home Pickering to tie the game at two. The T-Bones took their only lead of the night in the fifth inning when Pickering grounded out, scoring Rob Watson after he started the inning with his third hit of the game, making the score 3-2.

The Vipers reclaimed the lead again in the bottom of the fifth after Caughey walked Jorge Tang and Kuramochi to start the inning.  Both would later score, Tang on a base hit by Brinkley and Kuramochi on a walk to Jason Colson.  Justin Costi relieved Caughey in the sixth but allowed two inherited runs to score on a error by Delgado, the T-Bones third of the game.

Down 6-3 in the top of the seventh the T-Bones fought back again to re-tie the game on a two-out two-run homerun by Calvin Pickering off Viper reliever Geoff Freeborn, his sixth of the year.  Despite allowing three runs in his only inning of work, Freeborn earned his fourth win of the season.

Calgary bounced back to take the lead for good in the seventh, scoring five times off Costi.  Three of the runs came on a bases-loaded double by Drew Miller.  Costi pitched the final three innings, allowing five runs, all earned, on five hits in his first loss of the season.  The T-Bones added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings but fell short in the series opener in Calgary.  The Vipers used Ryan Olsen to get the final two outs in the ninth as he picked up his third save of the season.

The series continues Saturday afternoon at 2:35 when the T-Bones send Lavon Lewis to the mound against Kazuaki Minami at Foothills Stadium.

Game Notes: Calvin Pickering has now reached base in 19 consecutive games and in 15 straight road games…Kansas City moved to 5-8 in the series openers this season and have been outscored 83-76 in those games.
